Having extra inventory isn’t usually a fun thing. It means wasted warehouse space, investments dollars tied up in product that isn’t moving, and often some unhappy feelings about why the product is there (still) in the first place!
At Allen Packaging, we look at it as a fun challenge and created a great event for it. On Friday, June 8th, we held the Allen Close-out Island, where we showcased thevarious items that we want to shine extra focus and motivation to move to a new home – such as a happy customer who will appreciate a useful product at a good price. Everybody participates, because everyone has good ideas, and we have several consumer products such as gloves, rain suits, various packaging for moving, household cleaning products and lots more.
We divided the company into 3 superhero themed teams, announced through a light-hearted PowerPoint with appropriate dramatic music. The red “Iron Man of profitability” team, blue “Captain Great Service” team, and the green “Hulk of Fun” team (echoing our main company objectives of: providing amazing service to our customers, being profitable in what we do, and having fun!). The teams will compete for the award of Superheroes of Close-out, to be crowned in October at the end of the campaign. Second place team will will the Robin (from Batman) award, for almost-a-superhero of close-out, and the third place team will be doing the cooking and clean-up at the celebration. Also, a percent of the proceeds from the close-out product sales will be placed in a fund for the 2013 company trip.
